I’m confused

I was watching Glee last night and a family friend walked into the room in time for the first song. She hears Darren and says, “He sings gay.”

“Well,” I reply, ” his character is gay.”

“Yes, but he sings gay.”

What on EARTH does that even mean? How does one sing “gay?”
